Hello, i had a discectomy surgey in septemebr 2007. everything was going fine and the doc told me that everything is ok and now i can do what ever i want. But three days ago i ahve some oains on my leg and back and the doc told me that its an iflammation and i should take antiiflammation pills and i will be fine. i am really stressed if this goes back to the way before the surgery? Is this possible? Or is it just an iflammatuion? ps. i was doing a bit of heavy lifting after xmas, is it that the reason a got an iflammation??

Hello everyone! Its me again!!! Sorry for keep on bugging you but the pain is keep on coming and going and i asked my doc and he said its a logical thing and it neeRAB to have its cycle so i will heal better! Is this logical?
The pain comes and goes and i dont know why! Shall i start the antiiflammation pills again? Like for a week or so? Shall i strart tred mile on the gym or isit too risky? Btw today and yesterday i was hurting was i was walking too!!! Do u think the doc has right and it just neeRAB to to it's cycle? Or the problem is bigger? If i do tred mile shall i do streching too? or is it too risky? I really dont know what to do! Shall i trust my doc?

Hello again
sorry for keep on bothering you but i dont know what to do! The pain was gone the last 2 days and then today it came back and it is stronger. I am still on the antiiflammation pills but do u think now its too late? i dont know what to do since i was fine 2 days ago but now the pain came back.
The doc told me to reduce the antiiflammation pills, what do u suggest?
Do u think the pain is back cause i avoided walking for 3 days cause i had the flu?
looking forward for your reply

Jimako,
I wouldn't do any heavy duty exercising at this point but walking may be fine. You are 6 months post op now and if your pain is worsening and becoming more frequent, I would ask for another MRI. Please be careful until you find out what is going on.

It depenRAB on the anti-inflammatory prescribed to you. Some takes several weeks to build-up in the system. But steroiRAB are usually an instant intake then they back you off of them from there. So just taking an anti-inflammatory for a week may not be enough for you. You need to discuss this with the doctor.

It is possible you have reherniated again or that your in a flare up right now.

If you do not trust this doctor and have the ability to see another, do. A second opinion is always a good thing.

As to exercise, its hard to say. If you have reherniated, the wrong exercise could make things worse for you. I think this is one of those let pain be your guide thing. If you get any relief in doing some spine/core stretching... do them. If any of them cause you pain.. not.

Please keep us posted.

Hello Jimako,

What anti-inflammatory pills does your dr have you taking? Is your back pain in the same area where your discectomy was done? I think you may need to have an MRI done to see if there is anything new wrong with your back. I would recommend calling your dr first thing in the morning. Good luck to you!

I imagine it could be inflammation, but whatever it is I'm sure that your heavy lifting probably caused it. Try to avoid heavy lifting if you can - you're only 4 months post-surgery. Still try to take very careful care of yourself. I wouldn't freak out yet. I'm sure it's just a flare-up. Take the anti-inflammatories & see what happens (I've always been told you can take up to 800mg at a time, i.e., 4 regular Advil, 3 times/day).

the pain is were i had the discectomy but is a superficial pain. is not like the one that i had before discectomy when the pain was going deep inside. Also i can't stretch my leg and where i am about to bend i am feeling my back weak. do u think is because i need to strenghten my back? or is it a possibility the same thing to occure again as before discectomy? but i had discectomy only four months ago!!!! is it possible to come back again so soon? please let me know as soon as possible cause i am really fricking out here!
thank you so much!

At 6 mo. post op, I was becomming inflammed every time I bent over to pick somethig up. (I guess that is why they say not to bend, twist or lift). Anytime I did any of these movements, I became inflammed and had spasms that took days to calm down. I would highly think twice about doing any of the above mentioned movements. I would also suggest continuing to walk, esspecially if you had gotten into a walking routine. Once you stop, the more likely you will hurt. This did happen to me and looking back on it, I wish I had found the energy to get back to walking, once I was feeling better, even a little bit at a time. The walking is what helps to keep the pain down, or that is what my Dr. told me.

I really do not think this is anything to worry about, because I remeraber calling my Dr. so worried that my surgery had failed and wanting another MRI to make sure I was still ok. He kept assuring me this was normal. To walk as I could, but a little bit at least 2 times a day. To not do anything to over do it and when the inflamation begins again, to slow down and not to go back to doing what ever I had done the day before. I never seemed to beleive he knew what he was talking about or that he did not understand just how bad the new pain was. As it turns out, he did understand.

You may want to keep a journal of the activities you do ea. day. Then everytime you hurt more than normal, you can get an idea of what causes the pain.

Best of luck,

i am soooo stressed!! i cant go through this again!!

I am glad to have met you (so to speak :) ). It is amazing how many people on the boarRAB have gone through what we go through and I have found the same excitement that you described, when I found someone who descibed their situation and it reserabled mine, to the tee.

I am pretty sure that in the next month or so, you are going to see a complete turn around when it comes to your spasms etc. It will get easier to learn what you can and can not do. I have found that there are numerous adaptation devices that I uses to make my life easier. It was worth the money to be able to do things that I use to do.

My situation is a little bit different, because although my spine is now pain free, I have had other issues that have arose. My 1st fusion did not fuse, and so I had it done a 2nd time. The 2nd time around, the surgeon placed strong screws in place, so that if the fusion materia was absorbed again, the spine would still be stable, as if the fusion was there. That is what happened, the 2nd time, the fusion material did not harden and was absorbed into my system. But, luckily, the spine is in perfect shape and is held in place solidly, with the screws. After my 1st surgery, I began walking at 3 weeks after the surgery. The 1st time, it was only .05 miles :). Yes, I meant .05 and not .50. I remeraber being disapointed, but ea. day I added a little more and by 2 mo. I was walking 3 miles a day. I could feel the stregnth in my back and I really felt a lot better. The only reason I had to go in for the 2nd surgery, was to change out the screws, because they were small and only meant to be there to help as the fusion was becomming solid. When it did not do that, the screws needed to be replaced.

After the 2nd fusion, I was alot weaker when I got home that time. I think I probably began water excercises at about 3 months. That was my absolute best excercise. It was not hard to do the workouts, at all. I found a water aeobics class, meant for people with arthritis and other disabilites. As a note, there was no running for me, that ealy in the recovery. I think the stress on your back/hips, with each step that hits the ground, may not be good for the fusion, untill 3 mo. (when fusions tend to be solid by). Also, the Dr. told me to only walk and then he ok'd the water therapy, but told me no other excercises at that time. I would like to caution you before you start a more rigurous work out. Pleae ask your Dr. before you start anything new. I know that there were things that I would do and feel ok. But later, the spasms would start. That is not something you want to happen.

I know that my Dr. told me not to use the tread mill unless I used it at a slow speed. I can not remeraber the speed, but I know it was for walkng only, not for jogging or running. So, please be careful. I also want to remind you not to take any anti-inflamatory meRAB. like advil etc.

Please keep me posted on your progress.

I'm not sure. To be on the safe side I would recommend calling your doctor. I'm sorry, I wish I could be more helpful.

Good luck to you.

hey everyone thank you so much for the support!
i have been going to gym lately and doing just tred mile. my leg doesnt hurt anymore but i hjave a small pain a bit above of the operation, like in the middle of my back going downwarRAB. do u think i should make any exercises in order for my bag muscles to get stronger>? and if yes, which exercise is available? or shall i just leave it and it will only make things wrong?

hey Dear Lorie i am sooo excited that u wrote a reply cause ur situtation is exactly like mine and i am actually not feeling alone!!! The things u descriped the exact same things r happeneing to me and the fact that u r over this pain now it gives me modivation and happiness to moove on.
I would like to ask u , how long did it actually took u for all this to be gone? More than a year? So u r completely fine then? And u just were doing walking then? no running?
Aw thank you again btw!

Jimako,
You are probably OK if the pain is getting better. If it was too serious it would be the same or worse. You still need to really take it easy. After surgery you should NEVER left anything really heavy again. Your back is not as strong as it used to be and it will be very easy for you to re-herniate that area again. I would continue with the anti inflammatories and continue to take it easy. If it doesn't continue to get better or gets worse I would see your surgeon. Good luck!

Getting relief from the meRAB is a good sign. Stay on them even if you are feeling better, you wanna keep that going. I would stay on them for 3-4 weeks minimum and then talk with your doctor before deciding to stop them. You want to keep that inflammation down right now.

I would say if you are having problem after a week to 10 days and you are taking the anti-inflammatories as directed it is time to see your doctors. You may need to go on a dose of prednisone to help relieve the inflammation as well as have some follow up tests to see what is going on. I pray that you will soon be feeling better and that this is just a flare up.
