Inexpensive but good photography camera?

I know "inexpensive" and "photography" don't usually go together, but I'll try this anyway. I want a good camera that isn't just for snapping shots of friends. I love photography and want a camera for my birthday. Unfortunately, my parents don't want to pay for anything over $200, and I'm broke. Help?
 
A Canon Elan 7e with a 28-70mm can be found for that money. As can a Nikon N90s.

Both very good quality.

The N90s and Elan 7e very much have a semi-pro build quality.


If you have any sort of interest in Digital photography then you might enjoy the G series of cameras. The G6 can be found with regularity at the $200 level. Quality build and pretty good image quality.
