Industrial degreaser for bike?

I bought a gallon jug of Zep industrial degreaser for twelve bucks. You water it way down making it incredibly inexpensive and it works better than anything else I've ever used. My question is might it be too strong? The first time I used it I didn't wear gloves ( I realize how stupid that was). I lost a layer or two of skin and couldn't feel my fingertips for a week. I tested it on an old chain and without oil it rusted over night. As long as I get everything lubed up it doesn't seem to damage anything but I wonder if it could weaken the metal. Any ideas?

NO it will not weaken metal.

What you did was just clean all the oils off the chain so it flash rusted. The steel rusted from the water vapor in the air. Next time lubricate it as soon as it dries. Better yet, dry it and lube it without waiting for it to air dry.

Wear gloves with any industrial degreaser. The label warns you to wear gloves for a reason.
