Indoor Cat wants to go outdoors?

I have a male neutered cat that was born feral but we took him in when he wandered off from his mother. He wants to go outdoors and he is always scratching at our sliding glass windows, but we live in a busy suburb and I don't want to let him outside also because of the feral cats in the woods behind us and the dogs in the neighborhood. So today I carried him outside in my arms and he seemed so facinated he was looking all around and he really seemed to like it. So I was wondering if there is any equipment that I can buy to keep him safe and let him have fun outdoors in our yard which is fairly big.

If you want to "invest" in something, get a dog "run/pen".......10 ft x 10 ft, and put it on a base of "hardware cloth". If you don't know what that is, ask at Home Depot, or other home improvement store, and they'll show it to you. Basically, its really STRONG mesh......so the cat can't dig out, and nothing can dig in.......Also cover the whole thing with a tarp, or something else that can be fastened down, so that nothing can get in or out. This way.......your cat will have a "safe" place to be outside......If you want, you can put a small "igloo" in for shelter from wind, rain, or too much sun.

This is my best suggestion.......for a cat that thinks he HAS to be outside.

My cats have a large cat "condo" ( three levels ) sitting in front of our sliding glass door....( the side that doesn't slide ).......and they sit up there and WATCH outside........but I never let them out.

Hope this helps, and you & your cat are satisfied with whatever solution you decide on. Just know, that the more he goes outside, even on a leash, the MORE he's going to WANT to be outside!

Good luck..............

A collar with an ID tag that includes where you live, your home phone number, name of pet, and a tag that verifies that he has had his rabies shot would be help full. but you might not want to get one with a bell. If he tries to catch prey for you the bell will ring the prey will know and your cat will be sad 8-( We have a cat who likes to go outdoors and we have a collar like that and she comes back daily. It is a good way to let them get exercise!
