Indians, what makes you love cricket over other sports?

Why not hockey, India's national sport? Why not an indigenous Indian sport like Kabbaddi? Or yoga-asanas? Why cricket? And if you feel that you like it cuz it's a bat and ball sport, then why not baseball? More importantly, why not start diversifying into more athletic sports (like hockey and Kabbaddi) as well as soccer, basketball, volleyball, swimming, tennis and above all, track and field? Not simply because it will increase your chances at winning Olympic medals, other sports titles, etc and thus boost your national prestige but also because of your health. Cricket, whether you believe it or not, encourages laziness more than it encourages athleticism. Sania Mirza and Leander Paes as well as your hockey players are far better athletes than the likes of Yuvraj and Dhoni! Indian kids need to start embracing athleticism and as long as this near-exclusive obsession with cricket persists, that will not happen and sooner or later obesity will become endemic in India. btw, unlike athletic sports, which by nature encourage participation, cricket in India, where players are deified, ecourages people to become couch-potato fans! The IPL has just made this scenario even worse!

You don't have to ditch cricket, simply diversify into more sports.

Right, now I know I'll get some dumb reactionary answers. Instead of accepting constructive criticism, people would rather snap back! Whatever!!!

I'm Indian...heard this thing a billion times...!

Well, we love this game and so do we encourage other games as well...may be we see this very entertaining...or may be we could not excel in other games or may be we dont want to try anything new...

But hey, everyone has a right to like or dislike...why bother yourself ?

I'm an Indian and I keep track of almost all events that India takes part in. I also keep track of important international event, European Football, Formula 1 and Motor GP. Kabbadi is not played day in day out. Nor do that sport get enough attention. And I don't think Yogasana is a competitive sport.
Cricket gets exposure, and that's what attract the masses. And India is a force to reckon with. Why should Indians get attracted to Baseball, because that game has no base in India? It's the relative success and the way it is celebrated by media that takes the game to the people.

Leander Paes gets the attention for the right, bur Sania Mirza more hype than substance. Saina Nehwal and Anup Sridhar is better. Hockey has lost it's popularity, an after repeated failures and mismanagement, Hockey is never going gain the popularity what it had once.
In this busy world, one cannot devote time for too many sports.
