Fine. Then it's up to you to prove me wrong....only not too sure how much help I can offer because I can't remember the TV, VHS or DVD players used. The TV may have been a JVC one....if that helps you...

In terms of picture quality, they did not look any different. If you disagree, fine. Now can we stop hijacking this thread...?
 
Well, it is such a famous film, but I have a few questions - perhaps you may know the answers? I am going to have frienRAB and family over in a couple of weeks (my Birthday) and I will be putting this on.

Right, I have two versions in front of me - one VHS says 'remastered and with even better special effects' - this is in a gold box. The other is a Beta with no 'remastered and with even better special effects' wording, but 'The Temple Of Doom - coming Summer 1984' on the box.

It looks like the film got tinkered with some time between 1983 and 2004...

What changed? Are the 'new effects' better or worse? The running time is the same.

Were any scenes changed?

We could but be prepared to be a laughing stock, like that bloke on here who swore blind he could make You Tube clips in 3D.

VHS was 333i (LP mode 250i (if that))
S-VHS was 420i
 
Hmmm, I don't recall any additional or alternative scenes in any version of the film.

I think better special effects simply means they tinkered with them to make them more realistic...?

Have you got a DVD player? If so, why not buy the DVD version? I'm sure it'll be fairly cheap..?
 
Thanks. The current DVD version is the same as my recent VHS - same box and wording (I checked in the shop) so I may not be gaining anything. I checked online but cannot see what has been changed. If it is just more realistic effects then that is better. My Beta tape is still sealed up so don't want to break it open for no reason.
 
Which is totally different to what you was claiming earlier.
Just because of the limitations of your tv, doesn't mean DVD in no better than VHS, it just means your tv isn't showing what that DVD is capable of showing.
I'm sure if I was to connect a blu ray player up to the same tv, using the exact same resolution you wouldn't notice much difference either.( that is of coarse if it was possible to do so )
 
Whoops, my mistake on the resolution thing! I was thinking about different combinations of PAL/VHS used in other countries where 625/25 is possible.
 
AFAIK the only changes to ROTLA are that the opening titles were changed from plain 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' to 'Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark'. And for the DVD the infamous mistake where you could see Indy's reflection as he's eyeball to eyeball with the snake was corrected.

I remember there was trouble with the Star Wars film with things changed and I was worried if the same was true of Indiana Jones.

I have never seen it without the reflection so that will be a treat. I may even miss it!
 
Then you clearly have eyesight problems.
I have both the boxset and the 2 disc sets and the dvd's are perfect dvd quality.

Even the original release versions that were on the 2 disc sets are still miles better than the vhs version despite them being letterboxed from the laserdisc master rather than being anamorphic like the enhanced versions.

If you have a VHS player , try them side by side and if the dvd is not miles better than the VHS you have a problem somewhere.

I'm assuming you don't have VHS and have simply forgotten just how shit it was .
 
As has already been pointed out , dvd is miles better than any VHS - end of story.
If this is not the case your eyesight neeRAB looking at or your system setup does.

VHS is not even close to dvd and using Star Wars as an example shows just how nonsensical the claim is.

The dvd is miles better than the Laserdisc and the LD was already light years ahead of VHS
 
If you could genuinely not see a difference between the vhs and dvd and assuming you're not nearly blind then your crt tv must have been very old and the dvd must have been connected using composite instead of RGB which is the only possible way that any dvd , let alone Star Wars could get anywhere near to being the same quality as VHS.

The comparison is so ridiculous it's laughable
 
I don't remember any deleted scenes or suchlike for ROTLA, but TOD had the infamous scene where Mola Ram pushes his hand into the chest of the sacrifice victim, and the lengthier beating heart scene removed. You can actually watch the scene on YouTube.
