Indiana Jones...Crystal Skull

Hi

I noticed this post after I'd posted in another section. For those of u who have watched it on either Sky HD or blu ray this was my post:

Hi

I watched Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull lastnite on one of the HD movie channels. In the last 10 mins I could notice what I think is purple banding. The first scene is when they r running down the spiral steps and the second scene is where they have taken the crystal skull back and the room starts spinning. Anyone who's watched the film, is this purple snakes or magenta banding or just how it has been filmed? I'm watching it on a Panasonic 50 inch V10 plasma.

Thanks

Baz

Or, indeed, the inexplicably helpful monkeys. [EDIT]Just spotted that performingmonk did in fact mention the monkeys later on[EDIT ENRAB]

Oh, and FAO all the "It's not THAT bad" people; YOU'RE WRONGER THAN A REALLY WRONG THING!

It's terrible, the second worst film I've seen in the last five years after Click, no way on Earth is Temple of Doom a worse film than Crystal Skull, it's a terrible script, full of terrible performances (Harrison Ford not included there, he did what he could), and despite action sequence after action sequence it's REALLY BORING!

The only thing I will say in it's favour is that when I first saw it at the cinema I found the manner of the ending a bit "Wtf? Aliens?" however on second viewing I found that the aliens thing was flagged right at the start of the film and was actually obvious for most of the film.

My issues with it were:

1. They turned Marion Ravenwood into a giggling idiot.

2. Apart from the university chase scene, I found all the other chase/action scences tedious. They were uncomfortably similar to scenes seen in the previous movies. They felt lacklustre, a box ticking excercise rather than a genuine attempt to wow the audience.

3. I was embarrassed for John Hurt.

(4. Oh & Ray Winston, never been a fan)

i can never understand why Temple of Doom is so disliked. i absolutely love it, and although it is a deviation from Indy's usual type of adventure, fits perfectly within the canon i think.

from when Indy frees Willie from the sacrifice cage, the film is non-stop all the way to the end.

if somebody asked me to use just one image to define what "hollywood, summer blockbuster adventure film" means to me, it would be something like this

I for one didn't want to come across as a Temple of Doom hater. I bloody love the film! What I don't understand though is how Crystal Skull can be hammered yet Temple of Doom revered, when in reality both are flawed in similar ways next to Raiders. I remember watching Temple in about 1985 as a 12 year old and feeling very cheated that Spielberg put a small kid in as a companion for Indy. Even then he felt like a sop to the youngsters in the audience. I also felt the Shankara stones story didn't have the same weight as the Ark of the Covenant, and Indy's relationship with Willie didn't convince anywhere near as much, or have anywhere near the depth, as his relationship with Marion. It just wasn't the same.

But I still love the film dearly. As a summer blockbuster and crowd pleaser, it ticks all the Indy boxes in style. I have nothing but fond memories of it from cinema to VHS to DVD, and I still watch it today with as much joy as I did as a kid.

What annoys me though, is how people ignore the flaws of past sequels but tarnish Crystal Skull with the same brushes. I mean, OK we're all a little older (and in some cases rounder!), but I still had just as much fun with the gophers and the nuclear test site in Indy IV as I did with Mola Ram and the appalingly stereotyped brains feast.

but Willie is a pastiche of those screaming, hopeless, spoilt "dames in distress" from the republic serials. she is deliberately girly and annoying

just as Marion was a homage to the "feisty heroine" and Elsa Schneider in TLC was your typical "femme fatale"

for me, central to any Indiana Jones film is the character himself. i don't particularly mind what his quest is, the compelling factor is Indy. to that end, i kind of like the idea of him going up against an Indian Cult, it fits that character, and the whole mythos of 1930's adventure serials, which is what the films are homage to.

i never understood the whole furore around the monkey brains feast either, this is just a bit of knockabout fun, and i don't think was ever designed to negatively portray India as a whole

Having bought the DVD set in a fit of nostalgia I was rather surprised to discover just how mediocre they all were. Not at all how I'd remembered them from first runs at the flicks. The new one's no better or worse - just more of the same mediocrity.

I really enjoyed it. A lot better than Temple of Doom with that awful Shortround kid.

Why do people have a problem with aliens? Its Indiana Jones the guy who has encountered black magic, immortality etc so anything is possible in his world.

I've always loved the Indie movies, and found Cystall Skull enjoyable enough, would of enjoyed it a lot more of Shia Labeouf wasn't in it though. Is he related to every film maker in Hollywood? He's acting ability doesn't warrant him being in every other film that's released.

Its called a opinion dear. :D

A film being good or bad is rarely fact, it is opinion. I can't bear Temple of Doom and in my opinion I can't see what is so bad about Crystal skull when it feels much more like an Indy film. I mean it has Karen Ellen in it. It has major faults but I find it entertaining.

Well he had only had one previous adventure on screen at that point, so there wasn't really a 'usual' type of adventure at the time.

I guess as TofD is a prequel it is set apart from his usual adventures.
