Indians on Saturday shouted slogans as they marched on a street in New Delhi as they mourned the death of the victim. The gang rape shocked the country, triggering protests since it was first reported. Police responded to the protests by trying to break them up, using canes and water cannons, and blockading roadways.

The young woman's condition had "taken a turn for the worse" and her vital signs had deteriorated with indications of severe organ failure, said Kelvin Loh, the chief executive officer of Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital. She died early Saturday, the hospital said.
