India. Mixing languages.

I was flicking through the TV one night and I came across a Bollywood movie on Channel 4.

It had Shilpa Shetty in it so I watched for a few minutes.

I always wondered if it was common in India to mix English with another language (I assume Hindi in Bollywood films?).

For example, the script would go along the lines of "Hey, wait a minute" then go back into Hindi, and then something like "See you around".
 
My mate at work does this when he's on the phone to his missus. Its weird hearing speak hindi then suddenly say a sentence in english, then go back to hindi.

Nah but seriously, the younger generation of India particular in the urban modernised areas tend to speak English to each other, probably because it's seen as "cool" and "with the times". Bollywood in particular does this probably because it's been trying for years to reach out to a mainstream/western audiences, and using English is a way to do that
 
Its very common,not only in India,but Pakistan,Sri Lanka,Bangladesh,Nepal etc,these days.
The use of English worRAB,phrases,combined with the native language,have their own nickname(s),Hinglish,Tanglish,depending on native language spoken.
Hinglish=Hindi and English
Tanglish=Tamil and English
