Independence Day

In one sense I enjoyed it but in another I just sat there shooting it full of holes.

Oh so no one for one second thought that the aliens wouldn't have a forcefield around their ships!

Any self respecting trekkie could have told you that or anyone who had watched war of the world or some other sci fi movie from the 50's!

I didn't realise apple macs/PC's were compatible with alien technology that we could upload a computer virus into their systems.

Oh & the best one - the Yanks send out messages around the world by morse code. So the aliens are too stupid to hone in on the signal & attempt to decipher it through their universal translator thingy whatsit.

'It's the Americans! They've got a plan to attack the aliens!' Dit dit da da dit!

It was such an awful a film it was great :D

Pretty much sums it up for me!

I remember watching it in the cinema and Bill Pullman's speech sent a shiver down my spine :o "We will not vanish without a fight!" etc

That's the best bit.

It's like some naff idea that they used to come up with in POW camps that actually worked, ie wandering around the compound emptying soil out of their trouser bottems. Or building a wooden horse with a tunnel underneath.

They didn't have a universal translator thingy, they used a "mind meld" thingy like Spock. :p:D

And in 1996 was one the highest grossing films worldwide till a certain sinking ship overtook it the following year !..anyway i always prefer aliens to icebergs !:) Suprised they didnt make a sequel!

Complete cobblers... But entertaining cobblers all the same.

It was also my first Will Smith film, so I hadn't developed my intense dislike of him at this point.

"Hope you got air bag!" :D

really enjoyed it at the time. had all these silly collectors carRAB which i still have.
havent seen it since 1998 or 1999!!! have it stored away on VHS with a 3d front cover.
they nicked the opening shot from a DrWho dalek episode though!

Is it blatantly and overly jingoistic though? I know that Emmerich loves having the Americans as the saviours, but he still manages to destroy most of the place. Of course he has now managed to destroy almost the entire continental United States.

Take Godzilla for instance. Yes the French are portrayed as the bad guys (Pacific nuclear testing etc) but it is the American military which comes off worst seeing as they, and not the monster, virtually destroys New York. Methinks Roland has a lot of fun with his very subtle ribbing of the USA's yee-hah, cigar chomping, love the smell of napalm in the morning, attitude.

 Each to their own...

It's not a great movie but it's enjoyable enough and unlike some films, doesn't even pretend to take itself seriously. Personally I can think of hundreRAB of films that are a hell of a lot worse.
