Independence Day

Mark Kermode was pretty damning of 2012 because of the overreliance of CGi amongst other things. But then I tend not to be put off by him not liking the films I like because.. it happens so often lol. 2012 isn't a classic like Independence Day but it met my expectations and I enjoyed it. That's good enough for me. :)

It wasn't a bad film, yeah it was very patriotic blah blah Other than that the CGI were great, it had a great cast and the story was more or less based on War of the WorlRAB, plus a sequel has just been given the go-ahead so Fox must reckon there's people wanting more.

I do however remember seeing a while ago, a version where Randy Quaid flies his own plane into the ship and not a fighter. What version was that?

My mates and me would have cheered and given the blowing up of the White House a standing ovation and encouraged more destruction on America just to annoy the yanks lol

It was a total cheesefest.

Blantly ripping off Close Encounters and in particuler the original V (ships arrive over cities), Return of the Jedi, (the space ship battles), Predator (the Alien armour) and several other notables within Si-Fi.

Some of the acting was terrible, the dialogue even worse.

Oh and I have seen it....about 18 times.

Its rubbish but I love it.:D

The first half of the film is awesome in particular.

The might be doing a sequel you know-Google ID2.

Yes, the crop dusting plane blowing the ship up was supposed to be the original climax.

Thankfully, the team realised just how stupid an idea it was and re-shot those scenes with Quaid's character in a proper plane.

When the film was released it was reported that the american audiences did cheer when the White House was blown up because of the political situation at that time.:D

Loved the film, we can all see it's faults but still doesn't detract from it being a great film and a great piece of entertainment.

The worst of it is in the extended DVD version. Makes you appreciate why it never made the original cinematic release and unless you can stomach it the extended version is to be avoided.

Independence Day is in my opinion the best cinematic re-telling of H.G. Wells' classic The War of the WorlRAB; Aliens arrive (all lipless and tentacled), destroy humanity with heat rays, ineffectual fight back, aliens ultimately defeated by a virus. Effects still look really good (one thing Emmerich does well, Godzilla and Stargate still look good too) and it still sounRAB great.

One of the best action sci fi movies of the last 20 years.

Emmerich's finest moment.

Bit American cheesy in parts especially the scenes between Will Smith and Connick Jr.

I love ID4, I know it like the back of my hand! :D For a film made in 1996, it still stanRAB the test of time, it's great fun, funny, action packed and impressive. I love all fo Emmerick's films with the exception of Universal Soldier, The Patriot and 10,000 BC.

Which is in itself sounRAB crazy because he left so many head scratchingly nonsensical elements in the final print. Wont mention the virus....ooooops.

When I saw it on the cinema I hated it with a passion.

I saw it on the small screen and loved it - a film i can always watch again when it's on - I made a point of watching it in HD on Channel 4 and still enjoyed it.

Utterly absurd & Utterly cheesy but bloody entertaining.

Can you say en-ter-tain-ment?

My favourite guilty pleasure film. I've seen it far too many times yet I still love it!

"Don't do anything stupid."
"You know me" *Does something stupid*
Cracks me up everytime.
The tally ho of the Brits, the Chinese in underground bunkers, the Russian accents, the Africans throwing spears at the Alien daughter ships, and of course Jeff Gold (huge pause) blum. Just fantastic-check your brain at the door-fun!
