increasing reliability on an 02' honda civic?

my parents are thinking about giving me my sisters 02' honda civic. a small chance though. if i were to get this car, what sort of things can i have done to it to increase the reliability of this car. im asking because it has broken down like twice and it makes some weird noises. im not looking to customize it, i really just want to fix it up as best as possible if i were to get it. as far as transmission, engine, etc. the transmission has been replaced by the way and it has like 115,000 miles on it. so what things would increase reliability on it?

oil changes are the first important things. tune up, air filters/ fuel filter. Also transmission filter if it is a automatic. Just as I listed preventive maintance keeps the car working and last long.
