In windows movie maker, why does 'WMM' make the file size so much smaller,

even if I don't cut anything? I was trying to cut a few videos to free HD space and when I saved the project and published the video to my computer I checked the size of the new & original and the new one is much smaller. Most importantly, I did a test publish of a video with out cutting ANY of the video and after published the file size dropped from 58 MB to 10 MB. Seems like the quality is the same - 640 X 480. Any thoughts? Also, the new video doesn't have the .THM file next to it like the original one does.

Info after research: I looked at each file ext. and noticed that the WMM (windows movie maker) file saves as a .WMV & the vids from my camera download to my computer as .AVI. So I looked up the difference and found this: - http://www.ehow.com/about_6520807_file-size-wmv-vs_-avi.html -
Suppose I answered my own question but:
My new question is, to save room on my hard drive, will changing all my videos to .WMV reduce the quality & or the ability to use the videos in certain situations, like upload or playing them on a DVD on the TV?
