In the preparation of alcohols?

* From alkyl halides: react with aqueous NaOH or KOH (mainly 1° alcohols).
* From aldehydes or ketones: reduction with sodium borohydride.
* From alkenes: an acid catalysed hydration reaction using concentrated sulfuric acid as a catalyst (gives usually 2° or 3° alcohols).

Those are the three possible ways I found of preparing alcohol. I get the first one (with the alkyl halide), but the second and third, I'm having a hard time understanding as to how it happened. I don't know the principles behind it, and if someone can help, can you please try to explain it with a formula? It's a lab report I'm doing for Chemistry.
