We can't figure out if you would slap someone with your glove or if you would throw it down in front of the person (thus the phrase "the gauntlet has been thrown"). Any help is appreciated!
If you were a knight, or a man at arms, you would have a pair of reinforced gauntlets. There for you would throw one at there feet. Later more "civilized" times, you would use a glove and slap the man. Gauntlets fell out of use when plate armor did.
uhm if you could be more specific about the "old days" maybe. there are many ways. like in the medieval times, knights challenge others and the one who wins will be a "champion".or in the old roman empire, the gladiators fight for freedom, glory, blah blah.so i guess there are many ways man.anyway, hope i helped. *_~
It could be either. Slapping somone in the face with a glove was an offensive gesture intended as a challenge. Alternatively the glove could be thrown down in front of them.
