In the musical alphabet, why are there no sharps / flats between "B" and "C" and "E"

and "F"? In the musical alphabet notes range from A to G with sharps / flats between each note. However, there is an exception: No sharps / flats between B and C, and none between E and F. I've always wondered why? Does anybody know?
