In The Gulf War, Did The US Army and Marines Do The Same Things?

One of the things Marines have recently been reknowned for is the ability to work with foreign forces. They have believed in the hearts and mind doctrine for a long time. The Saudi Army was assigned to the Marines facing Khafji. The Marines put the Saudis out front. This gave them confidence and a sense of capability.

Iraq launched their assault against Khafji. The problem was that it was such a weak assault no one recognized it as their main assault. The Marines were requesting permission to assault the Iraqis with air assaults and the allied command refused because they thought there would be a larger assault. So, we allowed the Iraqis to assault us at Khafji. The Saudis were the first troops to engage. The Marines were finally allowed to use air assault. We beat them back long after we should have.

The Marines then assaulted up the coast with the Saudis toward Kuwait City. The Marines and the Saudis liberated Kuwait City while the Army was attacking further inland. The reason for this is the Marines could easily reinforce from the sea.

The Marines conducted other missions which had a bearing on the war. They had an entire regiment which conducted practice amphibious landings along the coast of Kuwait, pulling Iraqi forces further from Iraq and away from their command and supply. The Marine regiment which faked the assault on the coast contributed as much to the war as anyone else.

partly.
a large portion of hte marines were used as a decoy- they looked like they were staging for an amphibious assault.
as far as the forces on the ground, yes. anyone who tells you "the marines fought and the army only swept up" is an idiot and doenst know jack shit about war. yes the marines were the "tip of the spear" for an area of hte invasion...but the army was the "tip of the spear" for the majority of the area. not that there was really much to stab a spear into after our air force got done bombing the shit out of the iraqis...
either way, both forces made up the front lines that pushed the iraqis out of kuwait and back into their own shithole country.

During ODS many Marine units were in ships offshore, contributing to the ruse that a major amphibious landing would take place somewhere on the Kuwaiti coast, thus tying down as many as 7 Iraqi divisions pointing in the wrong direction.

For the ground assault Marine units in Saudi advanced directly into Kuwait towards Kuwait City flanked by Arab units - primarily Omani, Saudi and Egyptian with the Syrian's in reserve.

The more mobile, faster moving mechanized units of the Army performed a flanking manuever into Iraq wast of the Kuwaiti border in order to destroy Iraqi Republican Guard armored units being held in reserve in the north and to cut off the Iraqi's line of retreat out of Kuwait.
