In the Catholic religion, why do they require you to go into a booth and confess...

...your sins? Can't you pray directly to God and confess your sins and ask for forgiveness? Especially when the priest your confessing to is probably an alcoholic pedophile.
I was raised catholic, and always thought they had some very strange practices.
