...civilization past time? Given the events and trends of the 20th century, should we be more optimistic or more pessimistic about human nature and about Western civilization's ability to learn from the past?

also concerning for example, WWI and WWII; the Wiemar Republic and the Third Reich; the Holocaust; human rights movement after 1945; internationalism in postwar Europe; the end of communism; and the turn toward multiculturalism
 
Pessimistic.

We haven't even got to the point of learning from our mistakes. People in control are making plans for us without our consent, and the future is going to be worse than ever unless something drastic alters their ways.

We are brainwashed to the point where most people can't even question the truth of today's society.
