The Star Wars program was the Strategic Satellite Missile Defense System. The idea behind it's creation was that we would be able to defend ourselves against nuclear attack with a system of satellites in space that could destroy the missiles before that reached our country.

The starwars program was a space based missle defense system. It was to rely on satellites and orbital lasers to destroy enemy missles before they could harm the united states. Reagan attempted to make it because of the cold war and because with the pace technology was advancing it seemed possible at the time that by completion the appropriate technologies would exist. This did not come to pass (so far as I know). The reason for a missle defense is that it allows you to annihilate those without them. If you have one and somebody else doesn't, you can strike them while they can't strike you. It also makes terrorists less of a threat since they can't highjack missles and use them effectively in against a sufficient missle defense. The general fear of the soviet union helped make congress more agreeable to the defense spending on that project.

It was proposed by Regan to stop a missile attack by the Soviet Union or another country. It was suppose to have lasers to destroy the missiles still in flight so we stop any attack by missiles. The modern day proposal is the Missile Shield around the United States and allies. In the 1980's, the technology was untested and untried and cost a fortune but did scare the Soviet Union enough to ask us to stop in creating the program.

he was insane for even remotely believeing that would ever happen i think everyone today gets a kick out of that program and he attempted to make it to keep america safe from a nuclear attack
