...closest to Daniel Day-Lewis? Why have I chosen Daniel Day-Lewis as the reference? Simply, because he is the greatest actor of (t)his generation. He has done only 18 films so far, but has been nothing short of 'simply perfect' in each of them. A 'bad' DDL performance does not exist. For those who don't know, the list of films that he has turned down include: Shakespeare in Love, The English Patient, Schindler's List, Lord of the Rings, Batman Begins, Interview with the Vampire, Terminator Salvation, etc. And he is a hardcore method actor, with complete chameleon-like versatility.
So, amongst the present-day actors (remember: currently active), who do you think comes closest to him in terms of complete versatility? And when I mean versatile, I include possessing a chameleon-like ability to such an extent that when you watch a film, you ALWAYS see, hear and feel the character, and NEVER the actor. IMHO Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman are right up there with him (Seymour Hoffman edges out Depp, but only just).
What do you guys think?
