In studying the history of the Middle Ages, which of the following themes is least important?

1.The absence of central authority under feudalism
2.The acquisition of wealth through trade and commerce
3.A desire for order
4.The power and influence of the church
5.A sense of loyalty and community
 
1. “Feudalism” though the term is hotly debated among scholars or the period was a central aspect to medieval life. In Eastern Europe especially, the landlord often had power of life and death over his tenants.

2.) Important, so to speak, but most medieval economies were pretty insular. This is my choice.

3.) Google “The Great Chain of Being.” It was utterly essential that hierarchy be respected in medieval societies across Europe in order for order to be maintained.

4.) Again, the Roman Catholic Church was the proverbial glue that held society together and often dominated it. Before the welfare state, it was also the only entity that provided relief for the poor and indigent as well.

5.) See the Great Chain of Being. Remember that a peasant farmer in 1000 wouldn’t have thought of himself as French of British. He would have thought of himself as a “citizen” of the small town or village where which he lived.
