In sports, such as Baseball, Football and Basketball, can a two different teams from the same state or city play against each other?

Like can the New York Yankees play the New York Mets? Does that ever happen?

yes. this happens many times. like your example is a rivalry. just the the yankees and the mets are in different leagues and only play during the middle of the season. Most teams from same cities are rivals cause the play for the same city. some times teams from same states are also rivals.

i only care for basketball, but yes. in basketball, every team plays each other at least once during the season
