In some sports 3, 2 or 1 points for a win, 1 for a tie (if applicable), 0 for a loss. Why in some sports 1 for a loss? As winning or drawing points are also increased by 1 this simply complicates calculations at the end of the championship. Probably dates back to amateurs who did not turn up and forfeited points but less likely today.
