...outdoors only at each end.? In such corridors, the lighting makes it difficult to identify someone approaching you (or indeed whether they are approaching or retreating). why?
 
wow. this is a tricky situation. i guess it's to do with the spread of light and the distance from you to the peron at that distance. it almost looks like a mirage too. the distance is the cause of this, i think. im not 100% sure, but im just speculating on this. the constant pattern of the cross-section over a vast length may make light spread less and hard to see distant moving objects.
