Get a motorcycle.
You won't regret it. Ok... you might if it leave's you stranded in Brescia for no apparent reason but you only live once and that's another thread.
There's moto rentals in Milan... Just sayin'
FWIW, the Fiat Punto turbo diesel maxes out at 174kph w/ a passenger & 3 moto bags worth of luggage. Not much slower than a brand b r1200rt with a passenger and full luggage. When it isn't trying to kill you.
Don't get a cage.
The wife & I were in Italy for 5 days last year, and I +1 the caution about their driving culture. If you routinely drive in New York traffic, say as a Cabbie or limo driver, you might be prepared more than the average US driver/rider, but Italians take it to a new level.
However, if you're anywhere close to the Alps, Dolomites, or you can spare some time for a detour, you will have a new appreciation for the Italians & Swiss as road makers
