In Pokemon SS/HG do i HAVE to go to Mt. Silver to advance the story line?

I just beat Blaine and talked to oak, he told me to go ahead and travel to Mt.Silver. Is there anything in particular i should be looking for? do i get to travel to any other regions, like Sinnoh or Hoenn? 10 points to whever answers these questions, WELL.... okay, thank you :]
