In Photoshop 11, can I fill the background of an image that has just 1 layer?

Do I have to de-rasterize the layer or something? Or is there an easy way to fill somewhere? But I want the fill behind everything... thanks.
 
I think there is many ways -
1-first select the image ,cut it and now you work on background when done, past the image.
2-select the image , select inverse, now you can fill background.
3-select & cut image,make anew backg...,now past your image on it.
3-if it is more easy,select backg...,and do your work on it.
