Ok, I had some major dental work done again and now that the novacaine has worn off, I am in major pain!! However, I realize that if I was not addicted to pain pills, and did not find a need to take all that I had within a few days, then I would have been able to find a pain pill in the medicine chest to take WHEN I'M IN ACTUAL PAIN!!!! :dizzy: Good grief.

GRRRRRRRR. Oh well, I just took 4 advil and have a hot pack warming for my face.

Anyhow, hope you all have a good night!!

Reach, did you just take the aspirin, or did you let it sit on the bad area and dissolve? That's what we used to do when we were younger with either toothaches or dental work that was painful (and it did seem to work very well). I don't know how smart it is, maybe by now they've found it isn't a good idea, but for some reason everyone (back in the day) used that method, and I was curious if that's what you did.

Hey There Magpie

I used Oil of Clove after some dental distress and it helped a lot along with aspirin. Nurabs the area like Novacaine does.

Hope all feels better soon

PS Namaste to you also... my soul does recognize yours. Smiles

Keep taking the ibuprofen. You can take 800mg every 6 hours if your stomach can handle it. I would not go over 2400mg/day though. You can do that up to 1 week. Actually I have done that dose for 1 year at one point in time and was alright but I dont' take it anymore. You could also ask your dentist to call you in a Medrol Pack which is a corticosteroid. It helps your body to heal faster and also help take away the pain sooner since you heal faster. It is used after alot of surgical procedures.

p.s. you might find that ice feels better and takes away the swelling

Maggie.

I hate Dental more than almost anything in life. 2 weeks ago = broken tooth. BAM, root canal.

800MG advil actually isnt bad. Shaves off the edge.

Of course, as with most addicts, I would rather feel nothing. This morning I woke up with Horrible! tooth pain. Jaw aches, cheek hurts, ear hurts. Something is wrong. Did I mention how much I hate the Dentist?

Tomorrow 1:20...... God, I hope I can sleep

Hi

I just took the aspirin orally and swallowed. However, I don't see how an aspirin dissolving in the area can hurt. As kiRAB, our Mom had us put a whole clove in the area. Some of the old-timey remedies are still useful today, huh?

Hi Magpie :) like reachout i also used Oil of Clove ( i think here in aus its just called Clove oil) you can buy it from the chemist. I use that with Neurofen plus to take the edge off. I have to go to the dentist to get a tooth out soon as im getting ear aches when i breath in etc so I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!
Take care

Wow, that's great news (well, not about the root canal and other dental nightmares!). Come to think of it, my little jaunt here with oxycodone started after surgery for a dental implant, even before it was prescribed by my ortho for my back pain. I remeraber the dentist asking if I wanted a scrip for pain pills, and went through the list of them....including Percocet. I didn't want to seem too eager for the Percs, so I just played the "oh, whatever's strongest" card. And that, my frienRAB, was the start of my long slow descent into hell.

So I am truly hoping I don't have any other major dental work because I was really in pain. But it's good to know there are non-narcotic ways of managing it. I also used to use a topical liquid, it might've been Anbesol (?) or something, but it would kill toothache pain for a little while anyway.

Thanks for the support and the suggestions. As far as the clove oil and aspirin, it does work. When I broke my tooth, I used the clove oil in the opening and it takes the pain away; however, it does have a herrendous taste!! The aspirin can be crushed and put in the place of a missing filling or tooth and takes the pain away. My sister and brother in law do this when needed.

My jaw pain is finally starting to subside, as I've been taking 800 mg of ibuprofin 2 times a day, 1000 mg tylenol 2 times a day and alternating hot and cold packs. The other thing that I did was put a lidocaine patch on my jaw. I didn't look pretty, but it helped me sleep since it nurabed the area.

Hopefully none of you need to go through a root canal, crown and fillings without pain meRAB, it stinks. Oh well, I made it through without them and that's what counts :D

Thanks for all the encouragement...now my head won't fit through the door :D

My temp crown has fallen off, so the pain has returned. Back to what I was doing before for pain management, but at least I know that I can do it without a pain pill.....but I have to admit that I was looking high and low, and in every oddball spot for a pain pill that I may have laying around the house. E\ven had my husband looking!

Oh well, I guesss I made it through dental work and othe pain before pain pills, so I can do it again.
