something that I haven't thought about before, I don't have a data plan or a BB data plan, so is the 9700 worth getting if I'm not getting a BB data plan?

Having a BB without a data plan is like having a Ferrari without wheels on it. Sure, you can sit in it and rev the engine, but you won't be going anywhere.
