-caused a strengthening of isolation

also what does nationalism mean? is it patriotism?
 
The first part probably meant to say isolationism. This is when a country decides to keep mostly to itself. This includes not entering alliances, treaties, war, or a lot of trade with other countries.

Nationalism is extreme pride in one's own country. It also means that you think any country that is not your own is not worthy of pride. If that makes sense.
