From your description this is a detached single-family dwelling (i.e. a house as opposed to an apartment). Most rental/lease agreements for this type of structure specify that the tenant will maintain the grounds in reasonable order. While most interpret this to mean mow the grass regularly it also includes cleaning as you describe.

Check your lease; I bet you'll find the section I'm talking about.
 
ice storm? In February we had a terrible ice storm that left our rented property in a mess. There were down limbs and branches covering the entire property. My husband and I worked for months to clean up the property after the storm. Was it our responsibility or should the landlord have hired someone to clean up the mess?
