"Love in LA" a story by Dagoberto

"Love in LA" a story by Dagoberto Gilb, provides a glimpse of a young mans superficial view of what is important in life. Jake the young man in the story, is so caught up in his dreams, he never takes the time to find out what is important in his life. His view of the world is very superficial. For example, when he is involved in an auto accident he is more concerned about deceiving a girl than being a responsible adult. Jake also wants the material things in life but wasn't willing to work to get them. Jake's situation is further complicated when his need to impress people, results in lies and deceit.

While daydreaming about fancy cars, FM radios, cruise control, mellow speakers and his certainty that he did not want to be involved in life's daily grind, his mind wanders from reality and he causes a car accident. Jake has no intention of being honest with the woman involved in the accident. His intention is to distract her from getting important insurance information so that he doesn't get caught.

The story begins with Jake driving on the freeway. He is so enraptured by his daydream of better possibilities that he ends up smacking the car ahead of him. Jake considers driving away but instead he stops and finds out that the owner of the Toyota he hit was a beautiful girl. From there, Jake switches into his smooth talker role with Mariana. Jake then tries to con her by saying he doesn't have any insurance and assures her that he will pay for it. As he drives away, he sees Mariana behind him writing down the license plate numbers that he stole from another car.

Love is a powerful force that drives one person to draw a deep affection towards another. But in the short story Love in L.A., the definition of love is the exact opposite. Through “Jake,” the protagonist’s definition of “love” is expressed in different fashions, none results in anything positive; He portrays being lazy, irresponsible, somewhat poor, and perhaps something of a scam artist, looking for his freedom. Several essences reveal the main character true identity throughout the story: a love for image, self-conceit, and daydreaming. Jake controls how well he behaves, using image as a grand part of his motivation. First, the author portrays Jake’s worries towards the bumpers of the car before thinking of the other people involved in the accident.

There are many ways to develop a character in a story. . In Love In L.A by Dagoberto Gilb, the author does this in three main ways: by description, by action, and by dialogue.

The main character Jake's personality is shown through the narrator's descriptive tone, as well as narration of the story. In the beginning of the story we can see that the author describes Jake such that one can make the assumption that he is probably young. We can determine this because of Jakes manner and thoughts when he is sitting in his car. His way of cognition is similar to that of a younger person who's greatest preoccupations in life, like the stereotype of most guys, are cars and freedom.
