In academia (uni etc) we are taught to be critical in our reading and writing etc?

If a book has grammatical errors in it - should we ignore them because the book had a certain author or should we be critical and say that it was obviously edited and published without enough consideration for it to be 'SCHOLARLY'?

I have spoken to the author and he asks a few questions , thanks me for pointing it out and then leaves me with his own opinion that it is a recognised book.
How many errors should a book on 'CRIMINAL JUSTICE' contain before we dispel it as a bad publication? Am I being TOO critical here?
