In a used car, how many cylinders is best for the environment?

you want a V8, preferably one about 5 liters. you see, most large engines are bad for the environment, but when they get to a certain size they tend to burn up excess carbon emissions and are actually more eco-friendly.
 
Im a student and im going to buy my first car, so i don't have enough money for a hybrid, but I'm trying to limit my environmental impact. I also know nothing about cars, so I was wondering if maybe less cylinders was something that could help reduce pollution. Im already driving manual cause i know that reduces gas usage.
