i have a 1986 chevrolet truck 2 wheel drive the rear end is broke and in 1986 did they put the same gears in the rear end?

on the right side of the rear end, on the axle tube, between the center section and the brake backing plate, there is a series if letters hand stamped into the tube. all gm trucks have them, look hard, scraping off the paint and grease. youll see a code that always consists of three letters. copy down the letters and call the wrecking yard. theyll de code the letters and get you the excact ratio you need.

Call an auto salvage yard and ask them. They have a set of books that shows what rear ends were installed OEM and what rear ends are interchangeable.

what ? do you mean if you got a rear end out of another truck of the same year would it work then yes. as long as it's the same transmission type ( auto or standard ) and the same ton-age it should work. it's better to swap out the whole rear end than trying to change out the gears.
