In 1918 after world war 1 how did the Canadian soldiers get back to Canada?

Could ships at that time travel on ice and how long would that have taken!!

Please help need the answer for a history project.
My teacher said that the water would be iced up and I do not believe her. That why I'm asking this question!

Could ships at that time travel on ice and how long would that have taken!! The Atlantic gets very cold but it never freezes over. Therefore there was no need to traffic through or over ice.Ships travel at different speeds. The UK to Halifax N.S. might have taken 2-3 weeks by ship.
 
They took a boat back home..... just like when they took a boat to get to Europe..... and what exactly does ice have to do with this?
