Imported GSM cellphones

Hi all,
I sent this message to Tim of U-mobile, but I figured I'd post it here as well - the more feedback the better, afterall.

I'm looking for a new cell phone, and I'd like to get an imported one for several reasons. First, it gets me more bang for my buck: most North American cellphones seem to be way overpriced and underfeatured, and there's so much less variety. And besides that, there are a lot of cellphones in other markets that are just much cooler aesthetically than most North American cellphones.

The only GSM provider in my area is Rogers, and I'm still looking into what frequency they use, so for now let's assume that I need a tri or quad-band phone. (Unless you know which frequency Rogers uses in British Columbia - that would be helpful.)

[UPDATE: I've now read that it's important but not absolutely necessary to have 850Mhz GSM for Rogers. None of the phones I've looked at so far have this. I still don't quite understand why it's important to have 850Mhz on Rogers though, because (as far as I know) the phone will still operate without it. Could someone clarify?]

Now, here's the difficult part: I need the phone to have English predictive text entry, because I do a lot of text messaging. Which phones would be well suited to these needs? I'm sort of looking at the Vodafone 902T, but I'd like to know what other options there are.

The Sharp 903 is nice too, and I've heard a UK firmware can be provided for it, but it has no external display which I can't say I'm too fond of.

Also, I really love the 903T, but it doesn't have English predictive text and I've heard that there's no way to change the firmware on the phone (or no UK/European firmware available.) Anyone have any information to the contrary?

One other question: while I was in Japan, I saw a really interesting phone which I'd love to get my hands on. It had no external display, but instead the plastic on the back of the phone was partially transparent and there was an array of single-colour LEDs underneath. Text scrolled across the back of the phone as it would across a scrolling billboard like this one. Kind of impractical, but it was incredibly cool. Does anyone know which phone this is? I don't think it's a mod because it would require firmware reprogramming.

Thanks.

Sorry to bump, but I can't edit that post anymore. Having done some more reading, I now see that having 800/850Mhz GSM is extremely important to me, so that pretty much rules out all of the phones I've been looking at so far. This is very complicated >.>
