Import PS3s won't work online? Need verification...

I heard recently that any PS3s imported out of America won't work online. Is this true? I don't live in America and I was thinking of importing one, but I need to make sure this isn't true before I do.

Also, when you use the PS3 online store to buy stuff, do you have to use a US based credit card, or can you use a credit card from any country?

I have a Japanese PS3 (living in US) and play Resistance online no problem; HOWEVER, it only connects to the Japanese servers and not the US servers, so I can't play with my friends who have an US PS3. They'll all work online (except for the HK version I think), but which server you end up on depends on where the PS3 came from.

Don't know about buying stuff from the online store though since I've never tried it.

I have an american PS3 and live in Mexico, and all works fine
