Import Nokia N73 - Broken Main Camera!

A story that sounds very familiar around here for the most part. I purchased an N73 imported from HK through a Canadian website (I'm in the US). From what I've heard Nokia isn't likely to support this phone under the warranty because it wasn't from an authorized reseller (if this isn't the case and people have had luck getting warranty support let me know!).

Well, anyway... the main camera pooped out on me. A few weeks back I went to use it and the viewfinder just came up black. I tried rebooting a few times but to no avail. I put it back in my pocket and fumed about it for about an hour and then I tried it again and it worked. A few weeks later, same problem but it didn't go away for a few days. I tried updating from NSU using multiple product codes (original, euro 1, euro 2, ie, me, etc). All of a sudden, out of nowhere it came back but wouldn't focus (was blurry) then a few days later it went back to black and it's been that way ever since (now almost 3 weeks).

So, now I'm stuck with a broken N73 (or so it seems). I've read in other forums that people have had this issue (actually it seems most accounts of the issue were from branded Euro versions).

What I wanted to know was if anyone could answer a few questions...

1) Has anyone had any luck getting warranty support under similar circumstances?

2) I am going to NYC next week and will be going by the Nokia store. Do they have level 3 or 4 support onsite there at the Nokia Flagship Store? Are they more lienient than if I go for trying phone support?

3) If I try phone support will the ESN get recorded and I get flagged and noticed/rejected at the Flagship (in other words should I try one before the other)?

4) I've seen what the main camera unit looks like in the Nokia issued disassembly video and it looks easy to replace but is there any place that would actually have the main camera? (I've looked all over, including ebay and cnn.cn and stuff but no luck on the big cameras on phones).

5) Finally, is there a market for phones that aren't working 100% and is there anywhere that's better to try and either get one to take the camera from or sell mine (maybe to get an N95 or K790a in the meantime!).

5A) Actually - I know this is the Nokia forum but, do SE's have a worldwide warranty or is it similar to the Nokia one where SE America will tell you to get lost if you import/buy from a non-authorized dealer (like China Town in NYC).

Any good words are encouraged. I've looked all over and have heard views on some of my questions (well, "official" Nokia stances) but just curious about personal experiences.

Thanks all!

i suggest u bring it to a vendor and get it fixed, but from what u wrote, sounds like your lenses are dead...fixing the lenses might be enough to get u a new phone.

By vendor you mean a Nokia Flagship? (Since it's an N73, nobody carries it in the US yet so I couldn't get it fixed somewhere like Cingular even if I'm willing to pay, or am I completely making that up? )

Officially Nokia won't touch it. Their warranties are local. How long have you had it? Your only real options are:

1. Find someone in Hong Kong to send it to and have them pass it along to Nokia Hong Kong for you.

2. Call your retailer and talk to them. Depending on who it was, they might be willing to go through all that hassle for you. Never hurts to ask, the worst they can say is no.

next time get it from importgsm, they have a one year warrenty!! since you most likely cant get the phone fixed, you should take it apart and see if the camera has gotten lose! cuse to me it stoped working, then hour later it started to work, that usually means (in the electronic connector world) that something is probally loose!

I've had it since late September. I got it from hi-mobile so I'll give it a try... they do have a warranty you can buy from them but this being my first unlocked phone I didn't realize getting it was a good idea (boy what I know now!). Maybe I can entice them by paying the warranty fee now heh...

Thanks for the post!

I've heard about importgsm since my purchase... is that warranty included in the price or is that extra like it is at hi-mobile?

Also - I was hoping that it was a loose connector or something but if I listen to the camera when I open the cover it just clicks over and over every ~1.5 seconds so I'm guessing it's the camera unit itself unfortunately.

1 year warranty is included in importgsm.com price.

I stopped purchasing directly from overseas as the warranty is not covered here. First I try nokiausa, if the phone is not avaiable from them then I go to importgsm.
