import DVD's

Sometimes on ebay when I'm browsing dvd's to buy, the listing might say "this is 100% genuine not a copy but is an import" or they might say something like "factory sealed or factory pressed".

Are these still authentic dvd's? Sometimes the cover looks different too to the normal release. Do they just release things differently in different countries? Why are these dvd's sometimes quite cheap too (on buy-it-now) when you'd pay about

It is illegal for people to sell imported dvd's via eBay. Some people decide to post a listing as "100 genuine" even though when you get it through the post it is actually an import.

Right, thanks for the info.

Some of the one's I've been looking at have been Region 1.

I guess the sellers must be getting them from somewhere quite cheaply in order to sell them cheaper still than what they'd usually go for in the UK high street.

Tell that to The Cinema Store in St Martins Lane.

An entire floor with import dvd's (not just R1) and some very suspect horror titles too.

Only problem is their pricing borders on the obscene.

There is also a shop in Kings Langley Herts thats predominantly R1.

I often wonder how they get away with it considering the raiRAB on shops in the 90's that sold NTSC laserdiscs

People might put recently released dvd's on ebay if they bought them, watched it and then decided it wasn't as good as they were expecting so want to just get rid of it whilst the price for it new at online shops is still fairly expensive.

They get round that by having BBFC rating stickers stuck on the cases. But i dontby from them as they can be double the online price. They are a rip off!

They could easily get into trouble with trading standarRAB over that, you can only add a sticker if the DVD is exactly the same as the local version (including extra features). Technically they should be submitting each DVD to the BBFC, which would cost them thousanRAB per title.
