Impending Embarrassing Situation with SMS to Landline

For the second time this week I have sent a text message to a landline instead of a mobile. Is there a way I can turn off SMS messages sending to landlines (preferably in a way I can easily turn it back on if I need to)? Or perhaps a way to stop Home numbers automatically appearing above Mobile numbers when sending SMS messages?

So far I haven't sent anything embarrassing, but I did just get a phone call from my boyfriend's mother asking about a weird voice message and next time it'll probably be something much worse XD

Android 2.2's messaging app has a settings option to only show mobile numbers in the recipient field. You can look for that, but it may not be in 2.1.

Texts to a landline won't deliver, though. How would that happen, and how would a text turn into a "weird voice message?"

Yeah - this annoys me too. I've done this a few times.

Good to know Android 2.2 has an option for this. I can't see any such option in 2.1 on my SGS.

The HTC Wildfire is due to get 2.2 before the end of the year.
 
I've received a couple voice messages like that. It's a computer generated text-to-speech voice that makes Stephen Hawking's computer voice sound good.

Yeah, you can receive SMS messages as voice mail in most places in Britain now I think. My parents just bought some new house phones which apparently can read and send SMS messages like a mobile phone, but I'm not sure whether this works yet or not.

Thank you for your speedy replies, I'm really quite impressed. I'll just be super careful until 2.2 comes to my phone.
 
It depends on the landline "network" as to what happens. Here in the UK if you send a text message to a landline number it rings the phone, when you answer it says in a computerised voice "You have a text message from . The message says: (whatever your message said)." and then gives you options to replay it etc.
 
Actually, they would if the person receiving the text is

a) in the UK and b) on British Telecom


BT have a system where you can text a land line and it comes through as a digital Stephen Hawking-esque voice.

I don't think MMS come to landlines here. I'm not sure how it would display attachments. SMS certainly do. I can see that easily being very embarrassing if you send some girl a filthy text message, only for her landline to ring and her dad/husband/child to hear it or something. LOL. Cringe!
 
Yes, that could be embarrassing, just didn't look to see where they were from. Now that I see it's UK I realize my misstake, only Japan is ahead of UK in tech advancements.
 
Um... I'm sorry if that offends you but it just kinda came up in the humour of the situation.

If I really was that desperate to let you know I would have emphasised my sexuality in the original post.

I'm not going to go all up in arms and accuse you of homophobia or something, because I can see your point. But I'm really genuinely worried about embarrassing myself or any of my friends of whom I have both their mobile and their landline numbers by accidentally sending a message that reaches their parents.

I'd like to say thank you again to deserttopping and extorian (and anyone I've missed) for answering my question instead of just excusing me of spam.
 
Lol - I think nateap87 was also joking. I don't think I've ever seen anyone spam here just to promote their sexuality. Spam here is all about promoting websites.
