Imagine that you are camping in the mountains alongside a rushing, noisy mountain stream when in the middle of the night you are awakened by an earthquake. You fall back to sleep but three hours later awaken and are puzzled by the LACK of sound of any water flowing in the usually-loud creek. What is the most likely geologic reason for the sudden change in the stream, and what action, if any, should you take?

A landslide could have cut off the stream upstream from you.
A crack in the Earth could have diverted the stream underground.
Changes in the landscape could have diverted the stream in a different direction.

You need to determine the actual cause, so seek higher ground (to see the result of the earthquake, as well as to be above any flooding).
