A couple years ago, my back was really bothering me, but it eventually went away after a couple months. Now its back again and its KILLING me. Its in my lower back, and it seems like it comes and goes throughout the week. Ive ridden horses since i was born, but have been taking a break because whenever i get off my back hurts like crazy. Its been hurting mildly for a couple months now, but recently its gotten a lot worse. And its so annoying, because this morning, I woke up and it felt great. No pain at all! I thought this episode was finally done. And i just chilled all day until i took a bath and shaved my legs, but when i got out, it hurt like crazy, and hours later, it still does. This has become a typical routine - it feels okay, and then BAM it hurts again. I have pledged not to bend over anymore until this is gone, because that hurts baaad, and i've been trying really hard.

It's weird because I was never stiff or anything, and when my back didnt hurt, I could sit with my legs straight out in front of me and touch my chest to my knees without a problem. I cant even imagine how much that would hurt right now!

i'm a teenager but this is making me feel like a stiff old geezer!

Why does it hurt and what should i do? my parents dont wanna take me to the docters, and we cant afford a catscan or whatever those are.

Hello! I rode when I was young also- I love horses!
As I remeraber when you ride you do take some falls, I know I did!
And when that happens you can injure your back, and then irritate it by riding again.

Maybe stop riding for a while, get a couple of books at the library, on back strengthening exercises and stretches, start doing what the book says everyday!

And you might feel better after a few months, and try riding again.

I hope this helps and you feel better soon:)

Back problems don't just go away. You may have something wrong in there that need to be addressed either by an MD, or chiropractor. You didn't say how young you are but if you need your parents to take you to a Dr. than you must be pretty young.
Dear Parents, take your child to the Dr. it's you responsibility as a parent.

Hi, thanks for the replies!

Mamasan2007, i havent fallen off in years, and i'm not sure if horseback riding is what injured my back, but it sure does make it worse! your right, and i decided i'm not going to ride or run until things start feeling better. I searched for some exercises to relieve back pain online and have been doing them.

elle45, I am only sixteen! I figured if i go to the doctors, they'll tell me to stop activities that are stressful to my back, apply heat, and take pain killers, which is what i'm doing, but i told my mom tonight that if it isn't getting better in a week, I'm going to the doctors.

Doinket, it might be the stress to your back from the activity you do, but it could also be a serious back problem that neeRAB to be properly diagnosed. Do not go to a chiropractor unless a medical doctor clears you for that. Some chiropractors are fine to go to for every day stiffness and soreness, but people with real back problems, not just stiffness and soreness, have had permanent damage done by a chiropractor.

When I was 14, I started having back problems. When I was 15, I was in a lot of pain and asked my parents to take me to a doctor. They said no. Most of the physical problems I have today are because I did not get medical intervention soon enough. When they said no, I figured I would have to deal with it on my own when I was 18 and could legally take myself. That turned out to be too late for a proper correction. I am now 49 and have just had my fourth back surgery. One would have been sufficient to correct it if I had gotten to a doctor when I first started having such pain. I am now disabled (though still waiting for the government to recognize it). I very much regret not insisting that they take me, but I was only doing what a kid's supposed to do, not arguing with my parents' decision.

I hope that this turns out to be nothing more than a muscle strain, but you do need to have it checked out.

I wish you the best,
Emily

Hi Doinket. After reading BlueAtlas's reply, I just had to add my two cents. I ruptured my first disc when I was seventeen, and I did go to a doctor, and was told that it was just muscles...and given pain pills and told to behave. It was another fourteen years before a real doctor had some tests done, and I learned what was really going on. For a while I went to chiropractors, until one seriously inured me, like BlueAtlas mentioned. So my advice would be not just a doctor, but also a good physical therapist...which isn't going to help you at all if your parents are not willing to their job. Maybe you should print this thread out...and whatever you've found on the web...and present it to them?
By exercising, you're doing one of the best things you can do for your back, but again...it's important to be doing the right exercises. The last chiropractor I seen had me doing some that were criminally insane for someone with a bad disc. I wish you the best with your back...and your folks! Bill

Hi,
I am a parent of a teenage girl that had serious back pain for years. We found out that she had been born with back problems that didn't show up until she began growing during her teenage years. I would encourage your parents to take you to a pediatric orthopaedic doctor. He has a specialty in pediatric patients. I know how hard it was to watch my daughter in back pain. To be in pain as a teenager there is something that neeRAB to be checked out.

I can only stress what Blue Atlas said, don't go to a chiropractor unless you know seeing one would be helpful to your condition. With my daughter we were told not to see a chiropractor as it could actually make her condition worse. She did go through physical therapy a few times and it did strengthen her core muscles.

Keep us posted. cas

Thank you so much everybody! I haven't gotten to the doctors yet, but I'm definitely making an appointment soon.

Just one more question... I've noticed that I have sore knees, especially when i go to bed at night. It feels a lot like the pains, "growing pains" i guess that i used to get as a little kid. I think its related to my back, because this morning, i was just standing at the sink, and my back randomly started hurting a whole lot more and i felt a lot of pain in my knee as well. Does that mean anything?
