I'm trying to be financially independent so I get residency at Cali for tuition...

...purposes but..? if my parents are paying for my college, then does that mean I am not financially independent? Or can my parents pay for my college but I still be financially independent by having a job and paying for my own expenses.
College student, age 19 btw.
