I'm terrified of bugs but want a beautiful garden?

So I've got this beef with bugs, but I would like to try and grow something because it seems fun, interesting and a bit fulfilling. I've never really had a bad run-in with bugs, except spiders and roaches, so I don't think it's about what happened before to trigger this. (Except for spiders and roaches, of course; from those movies) I've tried to grow a zucchini plant, but I used totally new potting soil in a small pot because I didn't want it in the bug infested ground. That didn't work because I left it outside anyways. It ultimately shriveled up brown and dead, but not after some budding flowers. I think it's because of the pot, or some form of irremovable pest, but I can't bring myself to face the critters. Yeah, I've tried exposure therapy, it worked a bit with those pill bugs but not much else, and I wouldn't go to a therapist for this either, because it's not a full blown hysteria. Just a incredibly annoying adrenaline rush and tingling when I see one near me. So guys, any tips? Sorry this is so long :)
Oh, and it would be really awesome if I got comfortable around working with bugs in the dirt like that woman from garden girl TV
