I'm stumped on what to write about, can you help?

I'm thinking of writing a short novel or something, but I'm stumped on what to write about. I was wondering if I could have your input on what you think makes a good story or some plot ideas or even some of your favourite books so I get an idea of something. Thanks!
P.S. I promise you that this isn't going to become the next American novel and I won't plagiarize your story I just want some ideas for personal use.
