I'm really embarrassed because I'm 16 and don't have a car?

Okay well I am really embarrassed because a couple of weeks ago I turned 16 but my parents didn't get me any kind of car, not even a used one. And the thing is that all of my friends when they turned 16 they got a car... where I live that's like an expected thing. So everyone keeps asking me what kind of car I got and what color it was and did it come with GPS navigation and it's so embarrassing to have to tell them that I didn't actually get any car at all. It's not the not having a car that's so bad, because my parents let me drive theirs anyway whenever I need to go somewhere, it's just the embarrassment that stems from not having a car when all of my friends do. I know this probably sounds shallow but at my school everyone is judged first by looks/clothes, then by what they have (how nice a house, car, etc) and so for me not having a car is really threatening my social status that I've worked so hard all of these years to obtain.

Any advice? Please help me.
Yeah, because having a job wouldn't be at all embarrassing. Not to mention it would take years of work to afford the down payment. Any other suggestions?
I don't want to be unpopular! I've worked too hard for *years* to get where I am now to lose everything over not getting a car for my birthday. You guys don't understand what it's like when everyone around you has a car and you don't, it's humiliating!

No matter where you are, people are judged like that.

I'm almost 17 and I don't have a car.

I think you should stop working so hard on your social and go get a job. Maybe then you can save up and get yourself a car... instead of your parents just handing you one.

Edit: You think it's embarrassing to have a job? Don't you think it's a tad embarrassing to just be living off of your parents? Good luck in the real world.

And who said you had to get some brand new car? If it runs, it's good.
