Read through the first link thoroughly, it actually explains why you need a large motor controller.

The motor controller is the part that will utilize your power from your battery to your motor. Without it, all the power you charged up in your batteries will be used too quickly, or it wont push your motor. Think that a motor in motion takes up less power than a motor that is stopped and has to start up. Its an expensive piece of equipment, and im not sure if its already programmed for this kind of thing (im assuming it is) so keep reading up. If you are going to size your motor controller, use something 3 times the power of your motor. Eg: your motor runs at 40A, you should find a motor controller that can handle 120A. Any smaller will blow out your equipment.

Keep reading up from that first link, he seems to know exactly what hes doing to get it to work.
