...of the road is OK for bicycling? (I know that at least some of the roads combine heavy traffic and no broad shoulder, and that's what I'm looking for.)
There's books that tell you "how to bike ride across the US" and the prettiest roads, trails, etc. I live near W/DC and many people ride the tow path along the C & O canal to get to work and travel. I suggest a web search and pick up the book. A good map may help also, more so to show you what roads to stay off of. Good luck!
